Lisa Evers, assignment reporter for Fox 5 New York, filmed the reaction to news of the church merger at Our Lady of Peace yesterday morning. Our Lady of Peace is one of 55 churches that the Archdiocese of New York plans to merge by August.
At all the Sunday masses, Father Bartholomew Daly read the letter that he received on Friday with Timothy Cardinal Dolan 's decision that the parish of Our Lady of Peace would be merged into St. John the Evangelist at the Archdiocese of New York headquarters.
Cardinal Dolan, who was interviewed later by Evers said, "We've just got too many parishes...and it's beginning to be a weight upon us...."
Parishioners, including a choir member and those with family ties to the church, expressed their dismay and sorrow upon hearing the news.
Father Daly, who has led the church for 22 years, spoke to Evers about the parishioners. "I've always been energized and supported by the people, " he said. "It's the affirmation I feel from the people here that I truly love."
